19th-century vernacular vessel made from a hollowed tree trunk, retaining its irregular form, hand-worked surface and historic metal repairs.
Vernacular Tree Trunk Vessel - 19th Century
Description
Vernacular wooden vessel dating to the 19th century, made from a hollowed section of tree trunk. The interior has been worked directly into the solid timber, with the broad traces of the hand tools used to remove the wood remaining clearly visible across its surface. The exterior largely follows the irregular form of the original trunk, resulting in an asymmetrical profile and uneven upper edge. A separately constructed wooden base closes the vessel at the bottom.
Cracks and irregularities developed through age and use remain visible throughout the timber. Several splits have been secured with metal staples, forming a series of direct and clearly legible historic repairs. Rather than concealing the material's imperfections, these interventions have become part of the vessel's character and construction. Its precise original function and geographic origin are unknown and have therefore deliberately not been specified. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
