Large 19th-century vernacular vessel made from a hollowed tree trunk, retaining its irregular form and distinctly hand-worked surface.
Large Vernacular Tree Trunk Vessel - 19th Century
Description
Vernacular wooden vessel dating to the 19th century, made from a hollowed section of tree trunk. The interior has been worked directly into the solid timber, with pronounced hand-tool marks remaining visible across its surface. The exterior follows the irregular form of the original trunk, resulting in a subtly asymmetrical profile and uneven upper edge.
Cracks, losses, old holes and variations in tone remain visible throughout the timber, bearing witness to prolonged age and use. The lighter surface of this example makes the grain, tool marks and natural irregularities of the wood particularly legible. Its precise original function and geographic origin are unknown and have therefore deliberately not been specified. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
