Brutalist Tabouret Stools, France - Mid-20th Century
Description
French wooden tabouret stools dating to the mid-20th century, characterized by a compact square seat supported by four broad, strongly splayed plank legs. Rather than being concealed beneath the seat, the supports converge directly below it and extend outward in four directions, creating a distinctive geometric silhouette. The construction is deliberately straightforward, allowing the substantial sections of timber, visible joints and pronounced angles of the base to define the stools. Their combination of solid timber, exposed construction and strongly articulated geometry gives the stools a distinctly Brutalist character.
The same construction is repeated across a group of four accompanying tables, available in a separate listing, creating a coherent family of furniture in which the characteristic splayed base is adapted to different scales and tabletop formats. Six stools are available, each sold individually, allowing the group to be configured in different arrangements; together with the corresponding tables, they could form a particularly distinctive setting within a café or hospitality interior. Subtle variations in grain, surface and traces of use give each example its individual character. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
