Description

Minimal Bossche School, Shelves, plastic number, architect , Jan de Jong, original condition, Netherlands, 1970s An early example of the furniture designed by the Benedictine monk/architect Dom Hans van der Laan. Provenance private collector Oirschot Historical background house: The 17th century village house with a transverse wolf roof is a national monument, a list of residents of which dates back to about 1650. At the beginning of the 19th century the house was split, resulting in 3 separate residential units. During the thorough restoration in 1970, they were rejoined into one with the current layout. The large fireplaces in each room (5 pieces before 1970, of which 3 have been restored) create an atypical layout and justify the assumption that the house housed several canons, each of whom had their own room at their disposal. The location near the church and on the so-called Kanunnikensteeg are also arguments for this. Renovation in the early 1970s was carried out by Bossche school architect: Louis de Kok. The colors were chosen on site by Wim Hooft The furniture was purchased from Jan de Jong's studio. During the reconstruction period after WWII the Dutch architect Jan de Jong and Dom Hans van der Laan collaborated on several architectural projects including the interior furniture. They created an outstanding body of work defining the style of the Bossche School. Jan de Jong was able to translate many of Dom v.d.Laan’s idealised concepts and ideas into pioneering buildings and spaces. They worked in such close collaboration however that it is difficult to discern the individual level of input into the furniture they designed. The artist Wim van Hoof worked with the two architects proposing different colour schemes for their projects. The original olive green surface visible on these tables derived from one of those schemes.
