Anatolian Medallion Wool Rug, Turkey - Circa 1960
Description
This vintage Anatolian rug, dating to circa 1960, was hand-knotted in Turkey with a wool pile on a cotton warp and weft. Its composition is built around a large central medallion framed by successive floral borders, rendered in a remarkably subdued palette of faded blue, soft grey, ivory and muted beige. Decades of use have softened both the colours and surface, giving the rug its distinctive time-worn appearance while allowing the underlying pattern to remain delicately visible.
Anatolian rug weaving is rooted in a long tradition of regional and workshop production, with compositions often structured around medallions, floral motifs and clearly defined borders. Here, the traditional vocabulary is transformed by age: variations in colour, areas of wear and the low, closely worked pile create a quieter and less graphic expression than the original design would have presented. These traces of time are integral to the character of the rug, emphasizing the hand-knotted construction and giving the surface an almost painterly quality.
