19th-century European vernacular wooden bench, defined by its substantial plank construction, open armrests and richly aged wooden surface.
Vernacular Folk Art Wooden Bench, Europe - 19th Century
Description
European vernacular wooden bench dating to the 19th century, constructed from substantial sections of timber with a broad plank seat and a back assembled from horizontal boards. Four upright posts form both the legs and the framework for the back and open armrests, creating a particularly direct structural composition. Mortise-and-tenon joints and exposed joinery remain clearly visible throughout, while the rounded tops of the uprights introduce a subtle softness to the otherwise rigorous construction.
The dark wooden surface retains extensive traces of age and prolonged use, including tool marks, scratches, old holes, cracks, worn edges and variations in tone. The broad boards of the back remain visibly irregular, emphasizing the handmade character of the piece rather than concealing its construction. Its precise geographic origin and original setting are unknown and have therefore deliberately not been specified. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
