19th-century European vernacular wooden bench defined by substantial plank construction, open armrests and a richly aged surface.
Vernacular Folk Art Wooden Bench, Europe - 19th Century
Description
European vernacular wooden bench dating to the 19th century, constructed from substantial sections of timber with a broad plank seat and an open, rectilinear back. Three vertical supports divide the backrest between two horizontal rails, while the extended corner posts form the framework for the simple open armrests. The construction remains clearly legible throughout, with visible joints and an intentionally straightforward relationship between the individual wooden elements.
The surface retains extensive traces of age and prolonged use, including tool marks, worn edges, old holes, cracks and variations in tone. Particularly on the reverse, the roughly worked surfaces reveal the hand-tooling of the timber and contrast with the smoother areas developed through use. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
