Solid Oak Desk Attributed to Maurice Pré, France - 1930s
Description
French writing desk dating to the 1930s, attributed to Maurice Pré and crafted in solid oak. Two broad panel supports carry the rectangular writing surface, creating a substantial yet restrained architectural silhouette. The top is framed by a subtly raised perimeter with softly rounded corners, while a recessed moulded edge beneath introduces depth to the otherwise rigorous construction. The warm tone and pronounced grain of the oak remain central to the composition.
Maurice Pré was a French designer and decorator whose work developed from the refined cabinetmaking tradition of the interwar period towards a more restrained modernist language. Trained at the École Boulle, he worked with Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann before establishing his own practice in the 1930s. Attributed to Pré, this desk reflects this balance between traditional craftsmanship and architectural simplicity through its solid oak construction, strong proportions and subtle detailing.
