Settee in the Style of Axel Einar Hjorth, Sweden - 1930s
Description
Swedish settee dating to the 1930s, in the style of Axel Einar Hjorth, characterised by its sculptural wooden frame and distinctive scalloped backrest. Three circular upholstered back cushions follow the rhythm of the curved wooden profile, while two rectangular seat cushions contrast with the otherwise geometric composition. The warm-toned wooden structure features broad, enclosed side panels, integrated armrests and straight legs, giving the piece a strong architectural presence.
The design reflects the influence of Art Deco within Scandinavian furniture of the interwar period, combining restrained construction with expressive decorative elements. Its interplay of geometric and organic forms recalls the work of Swedish designer Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959), whose furniture frequently explored the relationship between traditional craftsmanship, material and modern design. The settee is presented in his style rather than as an attributed work.
