Screw Stool by Ron Arad for Driade, Italy - 2006
Description
Designed by Ron Arad in 2006 for Italian manufacturer Driade, the Screw Stool explores the relationship between industrial materials, mechanical forms and furniture design. Arad, whose work moves between sculpture, architecture and industrial production, frequently challenges conventional furniture construction through experimental uses of metal. Here, the familiar form of a screw is translated into a functional seating object, with a continuous tubular spiral defining its distinctive silhouette.
The stool is constructed from polished aluminium and stainless steel. A conical circular base supports a central cylindrical column, around which a steel tube winds upwards to form an open, concentric seat. A second, wider loop extends around the lower section to provide a footrest. The exposed construction gives the piece its characteristic industrial appearance, while the curved tubular elements introduce a sense of movement to the otherwise rigid structure. Two examples are available, priced individually.
