Pair of 19th-century European vernacular wooden benches, defined by long plank seats, broad supports and remarkably direct construction.
Pair of Vernacular Wooden Benches, Europe - 19th Century
Description
Pair of European vernacular wooden benches dating to the 19th century, each constructed around a long, narrow plank seat supported at either end by broad vertical boards. These supports are set into substantial transverse feet, creating a simple structural arrangement in which the individual components and joints remain clearly visible. Subtle shaping along the edges and rounded ends of the feet soften the otherwise rigorous geometry.
The wooden surfaces retain extensive traces of age and prolonged use, including worn edges, cracks, old holes, marks and variations in tone. Visible joints and fastenings further emphasize the straightforward nature of their construction, with material and function taking precedence over ornament. Their precise geographic origin and original setting are unknown and have therefore deliberately not been specified. The two benches are offered together as a pair. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
