A monumental palm wood sculpture by Pierre Theunissen, whose organic forms and architectural balance exemplify the artist's mature sculptural language.
'Neutral' Sculpture by Pierre Theunissen, France - 1981
Description
Created in 1981, 'Neutral' is a monumental sculpture by Pierre Theunissen (1931–2021), carved from a single block of palm wood. The work belongs to an important group of sculptures produced during the artist's highly accomplished period of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Defined by powerful organic volumes and a carefully balanced vertical composition, Neutral exemplifies Theunissen's sculptural language, in which form emerges directly from the inherent qualities of the material. Rather than imposing a preconceived image, he worked with the grain, structure, and natural character of the wood, allowing each sculpture to reveal its own internal logic and presence.
Born in Germany in 1931, Pierre Theunissen initially trained in woodcarving and carpentry before settling in the south of France in the late 1950s, where he developed an independent sculptural practice. Although he also worked in steel and concrete, wood remained the defining medium of his career, with palm wood becoming particularly characteristic of his mature oeuvre. Working outside dominant artistic movements, Theunissen developed a remarkably coherent body of work centred on material, balance, and the relationship between sculpture and space. Today, his sculptures are appreciated for their technical mastery, quiet monumentality, and profound sensitivity to the natural qualities of wood.
