Brazilian modernist lounge chair from the 1960s, distinguished by its substantial hardwood frame, exposed joinery and upholstered cushions.
Modernist Lounge Chair with Exposed Wood Joinery, Brazil - 1960s
Description
Brazilian modernist lounge chair dating to the 1960s, constructed around a substantial hardwood frame with broad plank-like sides and four straight legs. The structure is deliberately left visually explicit: projecting joints articulate the corners, while exposed wooden pegs connect the horizontal rails to the legs. The upholstered seat soften the otherwise rigorous geometry of the frame.
The chair reflects the material and construction-led approach associated with Brazilian modernist furniture of the period, where substantial timber and traditional woodworking techniques frequently became integral to the visual language of the object. Here, the contrast between the dark, strongly figured hardwood and the textured upholstery further emphasizes the clarity of the construction. The designer and manufacturer have not been identified and are therefore deliberately not attributed.
