Description

This double-sided low cupboard, known as "file rack”, in solid sisso (Indian rosewood) by Pierre Jeanneret was created for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. A sideboard with six compartments to store and display books, art and other curiosities. Four compartments in the centre and two compartments at the side higher up. The legs are formed by the body's two side panels. Characteristics of this wooden shelving unit are the hidden joints, clear shape and remarkable patinated wood. Its minimalist and pure shape create a raw simplicity. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit.

Jeanneret’s file racks were part of the furniture in Chandigarh's secretariat and administrative buildings. A rare design, highly sought after by collectors and design aficionados. It’s a true collector's item that can be used as a bookshelf, sideboard or even as a room divider. The file rack is in excellent original condition. The matching smaller version with five compartments is available in another listing.
