'Chambre à Air' Shelving Unit by Reinhard Müller, Germany - 1987
Description
Designed by Reinhard Müller in 1987, 'Chambre à Air' is an experimental shelving unit developed for the Café Casino at documenta 8 in Kassel. Its construction brings together an exposed steel framework, a large black rubber inner tube and a central arrangement of textured glass shelves. The rubber element occupies much of the structure, its rounded volume contrasting with the rigid, rectangular metal framework. Rather than concealing its industrial components, Müller makes them integral to the composition, challenging conventional distinctions between structural support, functional furniture and found materials.
Müller was a founding member of Gruppe Pentagon, established in Cologne in 1985 alongside Gerd Arens, Wolfgang Laubersheimer, Ralph Sommer and Meyer Voggenreiter. The collective became a leading force within Neues Deutsches Design, a movement that emerged in opposition to the functionalist principles traditionally associated with German industrial design. Drawing on experimental approaches to materials, construction and production, Pentagon developed furniture that questioned established ideas of utility and aesthetic value. Their Café Casino installation at documenta 8 brought these ideas into a public setting, where furniture formed part of a broader artistic environment. 'Chambre à Air' exemplifies this period of experimentation, transforming an ordinary industrial component into an unconventional piece of furniture.
