Art Nouveau Walnut Tea Table by Louis Majorelle, France - Early 20th Century
Description
Art Nouveau tea table by Louis Majorelle (1859–1926), produced in France during the early 20th century. Constructed in walnut, the table features two oval tiers decorated with delicate floral marquetry in contrasting fruitwoods. Slender flowering branches extend across the surfaces, their naturalistic forms emphasised by the rich grain of the surrounding walnut. The two tiers are connected by four curved wooden supports that transition into gently tapering legs. A moulded edge follows the outline of each surface, completing the composition. The upper tier bears the signature of Louis Majorelle.
A leading figure of the École de Nancy, Majorelle played an important role in the development of French Art Nouveau furniture around the turn of the twentieth century. His work brought together traditional cabinetmaking techniques and a new decorative language derived from botanical forms. Rather than treating ornament as a separate addition, Majorelle frequently integrated natural motifs into the construction and surfaces of his furniture, combining flowing structural lines with intricate wood marquetry. This tea table demonstrates that approach through the relationship between its curved supports and delicate floral decoration, bringing the principles of Art Nouveau into a compact domestic object.
