Art Deco Sideboard by Charles Van Beerleire, Belgium - 1930s
Description
Belgian Art Deco sideboard dating to circa 1930 and attributed to Charles Van Beerleire, founder of the Ghent-based furniture workshop La Flandre. The strongly symmetrical composition centres on a raised cabinet with six silver-painted wooden panels, flanked by two lower storage compartments. Deep red surfaces are articulated by black architectural detailing, a ribbed base and contrasting silver-toned accents, while the stepped top and rounded corners reinforce the geometric character of the design.
Charles Van Beerleire (1886–1955) was closely connected to Ghent’s decorative arts during the interwar period through his furniture workshop La Flandre. The atelier brought together furniture making, interior design and specialist craftsmanship, often working in dialogue with architects and other designers. Van Beerleire’s work for the Dagblad Vooruit building in Ghent, inaugurated in 1931, further situates his practice within the development of Belgian Art Deco. This sideboard reflects that context through its architectural construction, layered geometry and striking interplay of red, black and silver-painted surfaces
