Elegant Art Deco club chairs, France, circa 1930, executed in blackened walnut with later cowhide upholstery and provenance from Axel Vervoordt, Antwerp.
Art Deco Club Chairs with Cowhide Upholstery, France - Circa 1930
Description
These Art Deco club chairs embody the restrained elegance and architectural clarity that define the finest furniture of the interwar period. Executed in blackened walnut, each chair is characterised by its faceted backrest, subtly tapered uprights and carefully balanced proportions. Rather than relying on ornament, the design derives its strength from geometry, silhouette and the refined contrast between dark timber and upholstery, creating a sculptural presence that remains distinctly contemporary.
According to the original auction documentation, the chairs were originally upholstered in grey silk before being reupholstered in cowhide at a later date. The present upholstery enhances the architectural character of the design while respecting its original proportions and construction. Although the designer remains unidentified, the sophisticated craftsmanship and restrained formal vocabulary suggest the work of a distinguished French workshop active during the Art Deco period, producing bespoke furniture for private interiors rather than serial manufacture. The chairs are further distinguished by their provenance from Axel Vervoordt, Antwerp, whose eye for exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design has made his collection internationally respected among collectors and institutions.
