Arched Vernacular Wooden Door, Hautes-Alpes, France - 19th Century
Description
Vernacular wooden door dating to the 19th century, originating from Hautes-Alpes in southeastern France. Constructed from substantial vertical boards, the door is distinguished by its gently arched upper profile and direct, functional construction. One face remains particularly restrained, allowing the irregular boards, grain and variations in the timber to define its appearance alongside a small number of surviving fittings.
The reverse reveals the construction more explicitly, with broad horizontal wooden braces secured by numerous iron nail heads and straps. The original lock mechanism and additional iron fittings remain in place. Cracks, old holes, tool marks, losses and variations in tone have accumulated through prolonged use, giving the surface a rich material character while leaving the underlying construction clearly legible. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
