Kurdish Kilim Patchwork Rug, East Anatolia - Circa 1950
Description
Vintage Kurdish kilim patchwork rug from East Anatolia, Turkey, dating to circa 1950. Composed of multiple flat-woven wool panels joined together, the rug presents an irregular arrangement of horizontal and vertical stripes. Its palette combines deep burgundy, warm brown, taupe and ivory, with narrow accents of red and dark blue. The alternating orientation of the panels creates a geometric composition in which variations in stripe width and colour introduce a distinctive visual rhythm.
The patchwork construction brings together individual woven sections, preserving their differences in pattern, proportion and texture within a larger composition. Closely associated with the textile traditions of eastern Anatolia, the flat-weave technique produces a relatively thin, flexible surface without a knotted pile. The interplay of traditional striped textiles and the assembled layout gives the rug a graphic, almost architectural quality, while retaining the irregularities and tactile character of handwoven wool.
