Rustic Vernacular Wooden Chair - 19th Century
Description
Rustic wooden chair attributed to the 19th century, characterised by its straightforward construction and distinctive proportions. The rectangular seat is formed from two substantial wooden planks, supported by a sturdy frame with four squared legs and low connecting stretchers. Two slightly inclined rear uprights extend above the seat to support a single horizontal backrest, giving the chair a restrained, open silhouette. Visible wooden pegs and exposed joints emphasise its traditional construction.
The dark, richly patinated wood displays pronounced grain, worn edges and irregularities accumulated over time. Its unembellished form and direct approach to craftsmanship are characteristic of vernacular furniture, where practical requirements informed both construction and appearance. The chair's modest scale and expressive surface give it a distinct sculptural quality, reflecting the enduring appeal of traditional rural furniture. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
