19th-century French vernacular wooden bench with a high plank backrest, substantial wooden construction and a richly aged patina.
Rustic Vernacular Wooden Bench, France - 19th Century
Description
French vernacular wooden bench dating to the 19th century, characterised by its high, straight backrest composed of two broad horizontal planks, simple armrests and substantial wooden frame. The seat is formed from thick, irregularly shaped boards, while the upright supports and horizontal stretchers create a restrained, architectural silhouette. Its warm brown patina reveals pronounced grain, softened edges and visible traces of age and use.
Rooted in traditional French rural craftsmanship, the bench reflects a functional approach to furniture making in which construction and material take precedence over ornament. The slightly irregular proportions and hand-worked surfaces give the piece a distinctive character, characteristic of vernacular furniture. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
