A pair of Model 2202 table lamps by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, combining faceted brass bodies with softly illuminated glass diffusers.
Pair of Model No. 2202 Table Lamps by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, Italy - 1960s
Description
Pair of Model 2202 table lamps designed by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, Italy, circa 1960. Each lamp is formed from a compact, faceted brass body with an oxidised surface, incorporating a satin-finished glass diffuser on one side. The angular metal construction encloses the light source, while the translucent glass softens and distributes the illumination. Their geometric forms allow the lamps to rest at different angles, giving the objects a distinct presence both illuminated and unlit.
French glass artist and designer Max Ingrand (1908–1969) became artistic director of Fontana Arte in 1954, bringing his extensive experience in decorative glass to the Italian lighting manufacturer. His work explored the relationship between light, transparency and material, frequently combining precisely worked glass with metal structures. The Model 2202 demonstrates this approach on a compact scale, contrasting the solidity of brass with the diffused luminosity of glass. The design belongs to Fontana Arte's experimentation with decorative and architectural lighting during the postwar decades.
