Monumental late-20th-century Catalan escó from Baix Empordà, defined by its sweeping curved construction and integrated folding table.
Monumental Catalan Curved Escó with Folding Table, Spain - Late 20th Century
Description
Monumental curved escó originating from Baix Empordà, Catalonia, and dating to the late 20th century. The expansive composition extends across almost four metres, with a continuous wooden seat following the sweeping curve of a vertically panelled backrest. Substantial shaped end panels terminate the structure, while individual boards, visible joints and fastenings leave its construction deliberately legible. At one end, a hinged wooden panel unfolds to form an integrated table, extending the overall width from approximately 390 to 450 cm.
The piece draws on the tradition of the Catalan escó, a wooden bench historically associated with domestic seating, here interpreted on an exceptional architectural scale. Its pronounced curve creates an almost enclosed seating arrangement and naturally turns the piece into a place for gathering, while the folding table adds another functional dimension to the composition. Oak is documented within the construction alongside older timber, with pronounced grain, knots, repairs, wear and tonal variations remaining visible throughout. The combination of scale, curvature and exposed construction gives the piece a character that sits between vernacular furniture and functional sculpture. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
