Large Vernacular Trestle Table, France - 19th Century
Description
Large French vernacular trestle table dating to the 19th century, distinguished by its elongated proportions and substantial wooden construction. The long, rectangular tabletop rests on two widely spaced pedestal supports, each composed of a central upright rising from a broad, shaped foot. Wooden brackets beneath the top provide additional support, while the restrained construction allows the proportions and natural character of the timber to define the overall composition. The tabletop retains subtly irregular edges and a gently undulating surface, reflecting the hand-worked character of the piece.
The table bears extensive traces of age and use, with a richly developed dark brown patina revealing variations in tone, pronounced grain and numerous marks accumulated over time. The worn edges, softened corners and irregularities of the wooden surface contribute to its distinctive character without diminishing the clarity of its construction. Rooted in the traditions of French vernacular furniture, the table combines a practical, robust structure with an understated architectural presence, its considerable length and restrained form lending it a particular sense of scale. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
