A rare sideboard incorporating original sliding doors from Charlotte Perriand’s Le Mans housing project.
Large Sideboard with Charlotte Perriand Doors, Le Mans, France - 1954
Description
A rare sideboard with sliding doors designed by Charlotte Perriand in collaboration with Atelier Jean Prouvé, originally conceived for the Immeuble HLM Courboulay in Le Mans by architect Jean Le Couteur in 1954. Rooted in postwar French modernism, the design reflects a rigorous commitment to functional clarity, material honesty, refined minimalism, and architectural discipline characteristic of Perriand and Prouvé’s mid-century work. The sliding doors, originally executed in a light-toned finish, emphasize horizontality and proportion while reinforcing the sober, utilitarian elegance of the piece. Here, the doors have been carefully recontextualized within a newly crafted solid wood sideboard, whose warm patina and restrained detailing remain faithful to the modernist ethos of the original design. The result is a unique, contemporary piece that bridges historical authenticity with enduring architectural restraint.
Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999) was one of the most influential figures of modernist design, renowned for her human-centered approach to architecture and furniture. Collaborating closely with Jean Prouvé, she championed functional design rooted in industrial techniques and honest materials. Jean Prouvé (1901–1984), engineer-designer and master metalworker, brought structural rigor and technical innovation to modern architecture. Their collaboration represents a cornerstone of postwar French modernism, blending social ideals with refined design solutions.
