Goo Lounge Chair by Schimmel and Schweikle - 2020
Description
The Goo Lounge Chair by Janne Schimmel, Dutch designer, and Moreno Schweikle, German designer presents a baroque vision of furniture design, fusing the wild fluidity of digital ornament with the rugged tactility of wood-based 3D printing. Using a hybrid fabrication process, the designers sculpted flowing structural forms that resemble vines or roots, intertwined with ornate yet load-bearing details. The chair’s surfaces alternate between rough, organic textures and smooth, highly controlled curves - manifesting an eerie resemblance to natural growth while remaining fundamentally artificial.
Unveiled during A Tree Full of Splinters at Everyday Gallery in Antwerp, the Goo Lounge Chair exemplifies Schimmel & Schweikle’s exploration into how simulated and crafted aesthetics coalesce. In this work, decorative detail gains structural relevance, collapsing the hierarchy between ornament and function and highlighting how digital toolkits can infuse new life into woodworking traditions.
