An architectural sideboard attributed to Gerrit Rietveld, defined by an open slat construction and modular composition.
Sideboard Attributed to Gerrit Rietveld, Netherlands - 1980s
Description
Attributed to Gerrit Rietveld and executed by G.A. van de Groenekan in the 1980s, this sideboard revisits the structural principles that defined Rietveld’s work. The composition is built around an open framework of horizontal and vertical elements, with drawers, sliding elements and compartments integrated directly into the structure. Rather than concealing its construction behind a conventional façade, each component remains visually articulated, creating a layered interplay between solid volumes and open space. Executed in light-toned wood, the restrained materiality further emphasizes the clarity and rhythm of the composition, echoing Rietveld’s architectural approach and the spatial principles associated with De Stijl.
G.A. van de Groenekan occupied a unique position within Rietveld’s legacy. From his workshop in De Bilt, he produced Rietveld furniture for decades, developing an intimate understanding of the designer’s construction methods and formal principles. In this sideboard, structure, function and spatial composition are treated as equal elements, translating Rietveld’s architectural thinking into the scale of furniture. The piece is accompanied by documentation confirming its provenance and execution by G.A. van de Groenekan.
