Fish Lamp by Calvin Marcus - 2018
Description
A playful collision of craft, concept, and material, Fish Lamp by Calvin Marcus subverts the language of fine art with irreverent charm. Known for allowing ideas to steer the form of his serial works, Marcus brings humor and unexpected warmth to this functional sculpture.
Composed of glazed ceramic, silicone, Korean lacquered paper, and bamboo, the lamp balances contrasting textures and references. At its base, four amorphous ceramic fish feet - plopped down with intentional casualness - support a slender bamboo structure, gently cradling a gleaming, lacquered paper shade.
The result feels both sophisticated and delightfully offbeat: a floor lamp that quietly pokes at tradition while celebrating the beauty of the handmade. Equal parts object and artwork, Fish Lamp is an invitation to reconsider preciousness, utility, and the joy of not taking things too seriously.
